Award-winning Just Jamal the Poet visited my daughter’s grade 6 class and I went too! This poem reflects the early morning moments that so many writers seek.

WORDS AT DAWN

They all slumber. Deeply.

Soon, twinkling eyes, warm hugs and bed sheet smells will greet me.

Now, I’m alone. Well, nearly. Purrrr.

Alone with my body. Bend, stretch.

Alone with my thoughts, and thoughts I didn’t even know I had. Tap, tap, tap, clickity-clack.

Joy fills the screen. Dreams fill the head, the heart.

Pitter patter, pitter patter, pitter patter.

Over, almost before it begins, only to wait for more dreamy dawn silence in twenty-four hours.

Twinkling eyes, warm hugs and bed sheet smells greet me.

Mmmmm.
